Theological Expression

What is your dominant theology, and how do you deal with other Unitarian Universalist theologies with which you may not be in sympathy?

I retain a core principle of Radical Hospitality as a central or dominant theological principle. From sacred writings the world over, in most every wisdom tradition is the expression of welcoming the stranger.  I spoke above of the powerful impact made upon my heart in that 2005 GA sermon by Rev. Gail Geisenhainer, See ya next week.  Now I don’t recall if that was the true title, but that was the message!  I strive to grow and learn, seek understanding how Source, Creator, God, Mystery is made manifest within each of us.  To maintain a heart of ‘see ya next week,’ a spiritual practice of radical hospitality, to strive for right relationship(s) each of these a core theological principle for me.

Together they encompass and form understanding of building beloved community.  At my core is an 8-year-old boy who gave his child’s heart to his friend Jesus, as he had learned of him in Baptist Sunday school.  So my inner most core is Christian sensitive.  Unfortunately, my heart would be broken through the years, not by my friend, but by others who acted in his name. My personal spiritual journey would wind through loss and grieving of faith, and then finding UUism. Tentative steps towards reconciliation with organized religion. Adult exploration has led me through Taoism, Buddhism, Native American (Red Road), Atheism, Judaism, Paganism and Sufism each providing healing and wisdom.

My journey is a microcosm representative of the many pathways other seekers journey.  I still struggle with the many followers of my childhood friend Jesus.  I hold boundary from many who act in the guise of Christianity, yet within the collective I know and cherish many individuals who also struggle to maintain their faith tradition.  Connection and healing is made person-to-person, relationship.

My intent in working with others from diverse theological understanding is my keen and heartfelt interest in the spiritual journey of others.  Their theologies will be different from mine, each life’s pathway a unique expression of the human experience.  As it is said, “we need not think alike, to love alike,” I hold this frame of reference close to my adult heart.  How do you come to trust and believe what you trust and believe?  How can I, how can we in community, help you to deepen your understanding, your journey for your individual spiritual truism.
